Understanding volunteers’ motives and improving OmaKoutsi volunteer programme at Tukenasi Ry

The purpose of this research is to understand volunteers’ motives, learn what leads to volunteer motivation and explore how the volunteer programme OmaKoutsi at a non-profit organisation called Tukenasi Ry can be improved. Tukenasi Ry is a non-profit organisation in Turku operating since 1880. This study will focus on one of its volunteer programmes, called OmaKoutsi which is designed to help young adults with study, day to day and career related matters.
Theoretical framework of this study defines volunteer work and motivation in general as well as applied to volunteer work. Motivation process theories and Volunteer Function Inventory (VFI) will be introduced. Further in this research the literature will be combined with the interview results to analyse the key findings.
Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with volunteers at OmaKoutsi. A Thematic Analysis was used as the approach to analyse the data and find common themes. Based on these interviews, this research will provide recommendations how to further improve the volunteer programme at Tukenasi.
The results show that volunteers motives are not only altruistic but also egoistic. The main motive to start volunteering lies in the willingness to help and support but also to benefit oneself. Volunteers value intangible rewards but also highlight the importance of further training and socialising with other volunteers.
The study concludes that by understanding better volunteers’ motives, the volunteer programme can be improved. Two main point of enhancements are to provide further learning and interaction opportunities as well as ongoing feedback.
