Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions on migration and recruitment practices of Filipino nurses who were recruited in 2015 to work in Finland. This study also aimed to determine the presence of sustainable Human Resource Management (HRM) strategies in the recruitment practices and to examine its impact on recruitment outcomes based on the experiences of the study participants.

This study used a qualitative research method with individual semi-structured interviews on eight Filipino nurses who have experienced the recruitment practices in 2015. The data collected were analyzed through an inductive approach to thematic analysis. Data were organized and coded, and the analysis process yielded five main themes which answered the research questions.

The results showed that the Filipino nurses correlated migration to Finland as an opportunity to earn better and to have a healthier work-life balance. The data also revealed that there were a number of sustainable HRM practices that were utilized during the nurses’ recruitment process. The nurses’ perceptions of the pre- and post-hire recruitment practices impacted their level of motivation, work performance, and loyalty to the company. There were expectations regarding the role of the employer in supporting their employees in different aspects of skill development such as in language and nursing skills, as well as in career advancement, which therefore had an effect on how the nurses perceived their value and worth within the organization.

The results lead to a conclusion that the presence and absence of sustainable HRM in recruitment have significant effects on an organization’s health. The employees’ perception of their work situation impacts their productivity and commitment to the company. Hence, it is necessary for recruiters and employers to maximize the benefits of good recruitment strategies by incorporating sustainable HRM practices.
