Opinnäytetyön perusteella vanhempien päihteiden väärinkäytöllä on haitallisia seurauksia lapsen kehitykselle. The thesis studied by means of research questions how the harmful of alcohol and narcotics by a parent or parents influences on the development of a child under school age. In addition, the purpose of the thesis was to find out which are the factors that protect a child from the harmful use of substances by parents.
In Finland, the use of alcohol and drugs has increased in recent decades. Every tenth child in Finland lives in a family where intoxicants are used. The effects of parents' harmful use of substance on the child are manifold. The child's development is endangered, and the child may suffer psychological and physical problems both in childhood and later in life.
Alcohol and drugs were discussed as intoxicants in the thesis. The aim of the thesis was to present theoretical information about parenting, the different stages of a child's development, the attachment relationship, and behavioral disorders. Little research information was found on the effects of parental substance abuse use on the child's attachment relationship, but the development of the attachment relationship is of great importance to the child. That's why we felt it was important to deal with that topic in this thesis. The thesis was carried out using a descriptive literature review as a research method. For the thesis, information was sought from various databases such as PubMed, Medic and Cinahl Complete. The thesis also used literature and reliable, evidence-based internet sources as a source. From the databases, 12 research articles were selected for the thesis, some of which were international. The quality of the studies was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Collaboration (JBI) evaluation criteria. The applicant for the thesis was the child protection unit Tahkon Tupa Oy, which offers child protection and family services for children and young people aged 7–18, and their families. The unit also includes a four-bed accomodation for young people in aftercare. Based on the thesis, parents' use of substance abuse has harmful consequences for the child's development. The most important factor protecting a child's development is parenting and the formation of a secure affection relationship. A child needs safety, care, closeness and rules and boundaries. These factors are at risk when a parent uses substances harmfully in the child's growing environment. According to the thesis, when parents are using intoxicants, not enough attention can be paid to the children's well-being. A change is expected to this, so that children's development and consequences due to the use intoxicants by parents are not endangering the future of child. In the future, it would be necessary to carry out more research studies about the effects of parents' use of narcotic substances on the child's attachment relationship and its development as it follows throughout the life.
