The objective of the study is to establish an action plan for a new way to operate in manufacturing and pre-assembly in the case company. The case company had recognized a challenge in constantly changing markets and the urgent need of cost savings in the specific product so that the need of the markets would be met.
The research approach of the study is design research, and it includes four phases. The first phase is analysing the current situation and recognizing the possibilities for the cost savings. The second phase is a literature review of the existing knowledge and best practises based on the challenges that was already identified in the first phase. The third phase is to create an initial action plan for the new way to operate which includes four different suggestions on how to approach the challenge. The fourth phase is a validation of the selected new way to operate as well as initial recommendations from the steering group implemented to the future actions that need to be taken.
The outcome of this study provides a solution on what company need to do to achieve the set target and what are the next steps that must be taken to reach actual cost savings. Improvement of the way to do manufacturing and pre-assembly will benefit the company in all business units as well as the customers when the product is able to offer competitive and flexible solutions from the early phase of products life cycle.
