Tiivistelmä
This is an independent study that is based on the concepts of human resource management. The aim of the study is to find out how to ensure the effectiveness of the expatriate pre-departure cross-cultural training given to Filipino nurses coming to work in Finland. The pre-departure cross-cultural training should prepare the expatriates for better integration in and outside the workplace in the destination country. From the expatriates’ responses and recommendations, the effectiveness of the pre-departure cross cultural training is evaluated and improvements are considered.
The theoretical framework that are presented includes relevant concepts and references that provide knowledge on the research question and investigative questions. The theories present the need for cross-cultural training, the challenges that an expatriate may face in and outside work life and the cross-cultural training methods that are most effective for long term expatriation. The study is based on qualitative method and semi-structured interviews are conducted for data collection. The interviews took place via face-to-face meetings, zoom calls and phone calls to seven Filipino nurses. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data to produce a list that answers the investigative questions.
The result of the study indicates that each expatriate has different perspective and the cultural intelligence, the cultural adjustment of a person, and some other factors can also affect the expatriate’s experience. However, based on the study, designing an effective training program addressing the identified limitations of the current pre- departure cross cultural training could add value to the commissioning company and will ensure better integration of the nurse expatriates in Finland. The discussion and conclusion drawn from this study are intended to provide recommendations to the company for a more effective pre-departure cross cultural training program for better
