Tiivistelmä
Over 8.5 million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson’s disease, a neurological condition that causes several motor and non-motor impairments. Parkinson’s disease causes four essential symptoms: akinesia, postural instability, rigidity, and tremor at rest. Physiotherapy addresses these deficiencies and aims to improve abnormal movement, postural patterns, increase mobility through exercise, and improve both muscle and joint flexibility. New treatment techniques, such as combining music with physiotherapy are constantly being developed.

The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the outcomes of physiotherapy interventions combined with music for patients with Parkinson's disease.

The literature review method used in this bachelor’s thesis followed a modified approach. A systematic search of the databases PubMed, PEDro, CINAHL, and Cochrane library were conducted. Search words included physiotherapy, physical therapy, music, and Parkinson. The results were filtered to include publications from 2012 to 2022, while specific criteria for inclusion and exclusion were implemented to ensure the quality of the literature review.

The results included one systematic review and meta-analysis, one umbrella review, two randomized controlled trials, one controlled non-randomized trial, and one semi-randomized feasibility study. According to the reviewed studies, music in therapeutic exercises improves gait parameters and mobility.

Using music in physiotherapy sessions can result in an increase, in patient participation in their treatment. Thus, patients are more motivated and engaged throughout the process resulting in improved treatment outcomes.
