Tiivistelmä
The goal of this study was to create guidelines for Hurmos student festivals development. Hur-mos student festival is a two-day event held in Oulu. It is organized by student unions of OUAS and University of Oulu. The festivals’ purpose is to offer students a chance to familiarize themselves with local employers, each other and the city of Oulu. It also aims to create a cohesion between the schools’ communities, so the students feel welcome at their campus.
Hurmos is part of Oulu culture capital 2026 programme, and therefore is planned to be held yearly at least until 2026. Biggest income of Hurmos is the income made from ticket sales, Hurmos needs to be able to draw customers who are willing to pay for the experience Hurmos provides. To create the guidelines for this, this study aims to find out what can be developed about Hurmos. Because Hurmos is mostly organized by volunteers who cannot use their full time to organize the events, the points need to be defined so that they are realistic and achievable.
The knowledge base of this study consists of existing information from books, journals and articles. Another source of information is the internal communication of the organizers of Hurmos, and my own three year experience and knowledge about event organizing events, mostly focused on my experience organizing both of the Hurmos festivals which have been held. The internal communications are confidential.
The study was made by analysing feedback and developing solutions and innovations for future events, and then testing those results with previous years’ Hurmos visitors. The first part consists of collecting and analysing all the feedback which Hurmos has received from its 2022 event. This feedback will be presented for the people who organized Hurmos, and then asked to produce ideas based on the feedback and their own ideas on how to improve Hurmos. These results are shown to a test group, who have attended Hurmos or otherwise know what Hurmos is, and asked their opinions and ideas on the results.
The most fundamental findings from this study were that attendees are becoming more and more interested in the alcohol-free aspects, inclusion and the importance and visibility of student culture. However, not all the ideas can be realistically done for Hurmos, because they would require too much resources from the organizing parties.
