Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this descriptive literature review was to describe factors that cause burnout in nurses working in the paediatric intensive care units (PICU). The aim was to provide reasons for burnout in nurses who are working in paediatric intensive care units, so that other nurses working in different units and nursing students can prepare themselves for the possible situations that can lead to burnout.
The method used was a descriptive literature review, which was completed through database searches from Pubmed, Cinahl, and Science Direct. Inductive content analysis was performed from the 8 selected studies from the database search, which were organised into 5 generic categories. These results showed that the most common factor for burnout in nurses working in paediatric intensive care units was the demanding care of patients. This included exposure to pain, trauma and suffering, exposure to fatal and sexual maltreatment, as well as the death of a paediatric patient. In conclusion, the demanding care of patients in a PICU is the highest causing factor of burnout in nurses.
