The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has highlighted the need for efficient and low bandwidth communication protocols. This study aims to compare the performance and implementation of MQTT and its popular alternatives, such as CoAP, XMPP, and AMQP, in IoT applications.
The research methodology involved an extensive review of online materials, technical specifications from the respective protocol websites, and hands-on implementation of the MQTT protocol using Raspberry Pi and Arduino MKR WiFi 1010. Instructions for implementing MQTT were also documented as an appendix.
The key findings suggest that, in terms of bandwidth consumption and ease of installation, CoAP stands out as the best alternative for MQTT in the application. These results contribute to the understanding of low bandwidth IoT protocols and provide insights for IoT students, developers, and researchers in selecting the most suitable protocol for their applications.
