The aim of the thesis was to investigate the possibility of implementing barcode technology in the goods receiving process and to describe current intralogistics functions and propose development ideas.
This study is based on a current state analysis of the company's intralogistics functions and examining the company's readiness to utilize barcode technology. The literature part of the work focused on finding solutions to the challenges revealed by the current state analysis and presented general information about barcode technology and its implementation.
During the thesis project, the company was sold, and it was in the middle of post-acquisition integration. The new owner’s plan to change in the company's enterprise resource planning system greatly affected this study and its solutions. Consequently, changing and investing in the implementation of barcode technology was not seen profitable at this point since the greatest benefits of barcode technology can only be achieved after the enterprise resource planning system has been changed.
Since it was not seen profitable to change the barcode product labels already in use by the company the most important change proposed to the company's current processes was planning to acquire a barcode reader. This is meant to reduce manual typing of part numbers and serial numbers in various functions.
The most important development points identified for internal logistics were a more regular review of storage location optimization and the removal of unnecessary products. Other development points identified were the consumption of collected products and the transfer of storage locations, so that products are ordered in time and do not appear incorrectly in the warehouse balances.
