Impediments affecting project manager’s work

Abstract

Tutkimuksessa odotettiin löydettävän esteitä, jotka vaikuttavat projektipäällikön toimiin. Laadullista tutkimusta käytettiin haastateltaessa projektipäälliköitä heidän työtehtävistään, esteistä, joita he kohtaavat sekä parannusehdotuksista koskien heidän työtehtäviään. Tutkimuksen tulos vahvisti osittain aiempia tutkimustuloksia samanlaisilla löydöksillä, mutta myös uusia löydöksiä tuotiin esille.

Projektin aikana asiakkaan tekemien sisältömuutosten riskivaikutus projektin sisältöön, projektin aikataulun venyminen tai jopa projektin peruuttaminen voidaan välttää, mikäli asiakas otetaan mukaan projektin alkuvaiheessa, esimerkiksi projektin suunnitteluvaiheessa. Asiakas voi sopeutua projektiin paremmin, mikäli kommunikaatio on läpinäkyvää ja projektin aikataulu on sovitettu asiakkaan tarpeisiin, asiakkaan kaupallisen käyttöönoton aikatauluun, rinnakkaisprojekteihin sekä niiden riippuvuuksiin tämän projektin suhteen, kuten myös resurssien saatavuuteen.

Toisaalta yllättävät muutokset tai tapahtumat helpottavat projektipäällikköä keskittymään muihin projektin asioihin kuin projektin sisällön, aikataulun tai asiakkaan kiinnostuksen kohteiden muuttumiseen. Myöskin aika, joka viiveistä muodostuu voidaan käyttää paremmin uusia taitojen oppimiseen ja seuraavien ohjelmistojulkaisuiden teknisiin sisältöihin perehtymiseen.

Tutkimus tuottaa arvokasta tietoa projektipäällikön operatiivisen työn näkökulmasta. Tutkimus avartaa ymmärtämystä siitä, millaisia haasteita projektipäällikkö kohtaa projektin aikana.

The research expects to find impediments which are affecting the project manager’s work. Qualitative research was used to interview project managers about their work, barriers they are encountering as well as improvement ideas seen in their operational work. The outcome of the research confirms partially earlier research outcomes but also introduces a few new findings.

During the project execution, risk for the customer changing the content of the project, delays in project schedule or even cancellation of the project might be avoided if the customer is involved in project’s early stages, for example, in planning phase. The customer can adapt to the project execution if transparent communication channel is established and the project schedule is aligned with the customer’s need, for example, commercial launch schedules, parallel projects, and their dependencies to this project as well as resource availability.

Unexpected changes or events ease the project manager to concentrate on other topics than changes in content, schedule, or changes in customer’s focus areas. Time savings enable the project manager to have time to learn new skills and technical content of the release.

The research provides valuable information from the project manager’s operational viewpoint to understand better areas where the project manager faces challenges.
