Tiivistelmä
In this thesis the author describes their professional development as a youth ice hockey coach in Norway over a 10-week period. The thesis is structured as a learning diary where the author illustrates the implementation of the information gathered from the theoretical framework in a practical work environment through reflective writing.
The author first provides an introduction followed by a detailed description of their initial situation at the beginning of their professional development journey where they analyse their current work, the stakeholders involved and the different interaction situations they encounter as well as the supporting framework they will use as the structure to guide them in their process.
In the second part the author presents their daily diary-entries in which they critically analyse their own tasks and experiences as a coach in Norway through reflective journaling in order to learn from them to improve their own methods. At the end of every week the author summarizes their observations of that week and consults the theoretical framework in order to make a well- informed decision when planning for future actions and practical implementations when encountering a similar situation.
Lastly the author will conclude the report by looking back on their development process and reflecting on the progress they have made. A comparison between the initial situation described at the start of the report and the situation at the end of the 10-week journey is being made. The author makes the observation that a key aspect from their learning was the improvements they made in reflective writing and how that has facilitated even more in-depth learning. They have acquired a large amount of new knowledge about the mental development in youth athletes and the benefits that come with spending more time and effort on improving these attributes. The author has also deepened their knowledge of the ecological dynamics approach to practice design and obtained a better understanding of how to achieve certain learning outcomes through the creation of a well thought out practice environment. The quality of a player’s environment, their perception of it and their ability to interact with it in a productive manner are determining factors in a players long-term
