Abstract
As drug use becomes more common, more nurses will encounter drug users in their work. The health and social harms caused by drug use are increasing. Drug users have a multiple risk of premature death, and drug deaths among young people have increased alarmingly. Prejudices against drug users cause exclusion and make it difficult to seek treatment.

The purpose of our practical Thesis was to produce an electronic guide on the care work of drug users. The guide was made for nurses and other nursing staff of Rinnekodit housing services. The aim was to increase knowledge and thus support nurses in customer work. An important aim was also to reduce the stigma against drug users.

The Thesis mapped out what kind of skills a nurse should have when working among drug users and how to reduce stigma. Literature, scientific studies and websites of reliable experts were used as the sources of the Thesis. The guide was produced using the Canva website.

Expertise in the care work of drug users must be versatile. Sharing information about factors predisposing to overdose and the dangers of mixed use helps prevent drug deaths. Reinforcement of stigma should be avoided. The consideration of the nurse’s own attitudes and ethical questions is continuous. Valuing a nurse’s own work affects general attitudes. Being aware of social problems increases understanding and empathy. An empathic and appreciative encounter enables the creation of a trusting care relationship. Increasing information reduces prejudice and unnecessary fear.

The guide contains information about drugs, their physical and psychological effects, as well as instructions for dealing with overdose situations. There is also information about blood-borne diseases, other health risks and harm reduction activities. The principles of opioid replacement therapy and treatment guidance have been explained. The effect of stigma has been much considered. At the end of the guide, methods recommended by experts to prevent drug-related deaths in the future are highlighted. In the guide, small information bursts and questions are placed, the purpose of which is to arouse reader´s own reflection and to inspire the search for more information. Feedback on the guide was collected from the staff using a questionnaire. The guide was recognized to be useful and necessary in the work environment. The information given in the guide deepened knowledge and provoked reflections. The aims set for the guide were achieved.
