Tiivistelmä
As countries, including Finland, have committed to educating more new nurses to combat growing global nursing deficit, it is imperative to maintain health and wellbeing of existing and future nurses so they can enjoy a long career. Objective of this research was to identify main stressors in current global nursing crisis that are barriers to individual nurses’ career longevity and that new nurses entering the field would benefit from identifying and addressing at start of their careers.
This paper will give an overview of theoretical background chosen for the review, discuss objectives and aims of the review, and present foundational research questions of this literature review. Background examines current state of nursing and highlights main issues of global nursing deficit. Research method employed was narrative literature review with purpose to provide information for further discussion. After presenting chosen data collection and analyses, results were discussed.
Results of literature search identified stress, burnout, and sleep problems as main stressors that have negative impact on nurses’ health and wellbeing and are universal to nurses. This review concentrated only on factors individual nurses can control, manage, and avoid in their personal and professional life. In-depth discussion of effects of stress, burnout, and sleep problems in nurses, including possible solutions, are presented according to scientific studies identified by literature search. Human Caring Theory by Jean Watson is discussed in terms of promoting nurse wellbeing and reducing effects of the three stressors.
Additional section provides an overview of current employment challenges in global and European nursing, immigration employment issues for new nursing graduates, with consideration to possible effect on the three main stressors. Overall recommendations found that new nurses should adopt healthy habits, including regular physical activity, proper diet, and good sleep hygiene, as soon as possible to assuage harmful effects of stress, burnout, and chronic sleep problems throughout their careers. Instilling a healthy lifestyle that supports new nurses’ physical and psychological health and wellbeing directly translates to positive career longevity.
