Tiivistelmä
In Germany, district heating is discussed as one solution to reach the set climate goals and to become more independent in energy production. Due to issues in gas supply, reduction targets of greenhouse gas emis-sions and bans on fossil fuels, it is estimated that the share of district heating will grow significantly. The aim of the thesis was to investigate how the future of district heating in Germany would look like and what kind of changes could be expected in the market. The research was done for the client company Vexve Oy because of their interests in the German district heating market.
The thesis is based on research and information from multiple governmental sources, different district heat-ing related associations, and from newspapers. The research began discussing the history of district heating and its development to date. Based on the information gathered, an overview of energy production was established, and probable future scenarios were constructed.
The result of the thesis is a conclusion about what will be expected in the district heating market during the next 20 to 30 years. There will be a ban on fossil fuels used for heating and subventions programs for re-newable energy systems, which will create more market opportunities for district heating and other alterna-tive heating systems. The conclusions will be used in future market strategy planning in Vexve Oy.
