Tiivistelmä
The objective of the thesis was to discover if visual appearance was important for heritage hotels. Another intention was to investigate if a hotel’s general visual appearance has effect on accommodation decision-making and what different expectations people have on modern and historic based hotels.
The main topics of this study were what defined a heritage hotel, a guest journey mapping, and its different stages. The study also explained hotel selection attributes and them having an effect on decision-making process and lastly about demographic segmentation and its benefits.
The study was conducted by interviews, where the research group were people, who travelled for leisure and enjoyment and preferred to stay in a hotel during their trips. The research methodology was qualitative. In addition, data were collected through open-ended interviews with eleven questions connected to the research problems.
The results showed that, visual appearance did have an effect towards the choice of accommodation, but personal preferences appeared to have an influence on decision-making. The results also indicated interviewees had opposite expectations on both modern and historic based hotels and that visual appearance was the most important part of running a heritage hotel. In conclusion, the most useful approach for heritage hotels could be investing towards preserving appearance and branding it. Therefore, by incorporating the insights of this study, a heritage hotel can improve their general guest experience and give a beautiful and historical experience for its guests.
