Technology has paved its way into almost every aspect of modern human life. It has changed how humans live their lives. Similarly, it has started to affect healthcare sector which can have a positive impact and cause challenges. Population is ageing rapidly in Western world due to better healthcare, advancement in medicines, improved lifestyles, inception of assisting devices and lifesaving drugs and higher life expectancy. It has resulted in increased number of retirees in population causing a change in demographics of society. It has also increased the need of healthcare professionals and facilities to take care of ever-growing elderly population. Therefore, resulting in acute shortage of healthcare personnel.
Bachelor thesis work was carried out as a literature review, research was performed through reliable databases such as PubMed, ResearchGate. The author chose 10 articles to discuss the findings and make an analysis of different articles found through databases. After carefully evaluation, it was found out that how technology can be helpful in future mitigating issues of both Nurses and patients. Further, robotics was given importance while making thesis as it is currently most favored and feasible option to implement.
It was identified that technological advancement can be beneficial for elderly patients in different ways such as assisting them with their daily needs, reminding them of their daily chores, medication timetable and monitoring them. It can also improve their navigation abilities, assist in activities of daily living and improving quality of life for people with memory issues such as dementia and provide them an opportunity of companionship and connectivity without social pressure and anxiety. However, advancement also offers challenges that needs to be addressed to use full potential of robotics in future and alleviate the pressure of healthcare personnel or facilities.
