Tiivistelmä
Cancer is a collection of illnesses, and the exact causes of cancer are not fully understood. Eating well is one of the most important things that can affect how long people with cancer live. A comprehensive and balanced eating pattern has the capacity to reduce the risk of developing cancer by around 10-20%. The current cancer prevention recommendations focus on maintaining a healthy weight, controlling medication side effects, and boosting the immune system.

The findings of the previous studies indicated that there was a notable decrease in the number of chemotherapy-induced vomiting occurrences seen in the intervention group receiving the ONS, while the control group showed a relatively smaller reduction. Moreover, individuals in the intervention's group indicated higher levels of well-being and enhanced behavior toward chemotherapy treatments. Recent studies have emphasized the considerable impact of dietary interventions in reducing the adverse consequences of chemotherapy and improving the overall prognosis of persons diagnosed with cancer. The need of adhering to a balanced diet that encompasses a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats, while concurrently limiting the intake of processed foods and drinks with added sugar, is underscored in current dietary recommendations. Previous studies have highlighted the necessity for tailored diets. Although following basic food requirements is crucial, oral nutritional supplements help retain muscle mass and reduce chemotherapy side effects. This comprehensive strategy may improve cancer therapy and patient’s quality of life. Adequate diet, including vegetables, fruits, and natural supplements, is essential for preventing and treating chemotherapy side effects.

The purpose of this study was to find out what is the impact of diet on chemotherapy induced side effects and cancer treatment outcomes for cancer patients and the aim was to identify dietary interventions for preventing and managing chemotherapy induced side effects.

This study reviewed relevant research on the effects of diets on chemotherapy side effects and treatment results to find out what kind of diet changes can help prevent and manage chemotherapy related side effects. For the Savonia UAS NURSKL course, this study guide will be used as an online learning tool.

There exists a need to enhance the quantity and quality of studies and research focused to investigating the significance of dietary interventions in the context of cancer treatment, with particular emphasis on their potential for reducing and removing the adverse effects associated with chemotherapy. The use of a nutritious diet has been shown to enhance the overall well-being and enhance the standard of life for those diagnosed with cancer.
