Tiivistelmä
Globalization continues to bring diverse populations together. However, the need for effective cross-cultural communication, especially, in healthcare has become increasingly vital. Language barrier has been a challenge for most international students, exposing them to many untoward treatments both from their peers and mentors during their studies and at their various places of internship. This thesis explores some of challenges
posed by language barriers in healthcare communication, specifically focusing on their profound impact on international students. This study investigates the multifaceted nature of language barriers and their implications on the well-being and healthcare experiences of international students and ways they can overcome them. The product of this thesis was a poster that outlined in detail the challenges of language barrier and its effects on
the overall well-being of international students studying nursing in Finland. The poster will be used as a teaching material at Savonia University of Applied Sciences to educate incoming international students about the challenges and implications of language barrier and how to overcome them. The product of this thesis, which is a poster, underscores the significance of language among healthcare professionals and the need for tailored communication strategies to bridge the gap. The highlights from the poster reveal that language barriers do not only impede the exchange of critical health information but also contribute to feelings of vulnerability and dis-empowerment among international students. Additionally, the poster highlights some of the ways language can be learnt by international students to be able to better communicate with their peers and mentors at school and at their places of internship.
