Tiivistelmä
The Impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of nursing students has been significant, with widespread effects observed globally. The abrupt transition to online learning increased stress levels, affecting the overall well-being of nursing students. The theoretical underpinning of the thesis highlights the importance of understanding the social context
and learning influences on mental health outcomes. The development work further discusses coping strategies employed by students during the pandemic as coping strategies varied among students and the findings suggest that interventions and coping strategies are essential for mitigating the mental health impact of COVID-19 on nursing students.
The purpose of this developmental work was to produce an online learning material for Savonia UAS nursing students
which would unearth possible effects that COVID-19 pandemic has had on the mental health of the nursing students.
The objectives of this online learning material are to provide nursing students tools to self-assess their individual mental health resulting from COVID-19 pandemic lockdown as well as provide nursing students tools to mitigate the impact
of the pandemic on students through evidence-based guidelines.
This thesis was a development work that followed a linear method which involved a structured and sequential progression through distinct stages. The design approach of the online reading material incorporated both pedagogical and
User-Centered design principles. Pedagogical principles focused on creating effective digital learning materials while
User-Centered design principles prioritized user involvement. Data searching was conducted through literature search
for the online learning material titled ’’Questions and Answers (Q & A) Procedures related to impact of COVID-19 on
mental health of nursing students’’, developed as a result of this study. These procedures are designed to offer guidance and support to nursing students in similar situations, should future occurrences of crises like the COVID-19 pandemic arise. The adoption of the online reading material would involve seamlessly integrating the product into the
Moodle e-learning area of Savonia UAS, expanding its accessibility to a broader audience.
Through a combination of literature search and developmental methods, this thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the mental health challenges faced by nursing students during the pandemic. It not only sheds light on
their experiences but also equips them with valuable resources for addressing mental health issues in times of crisis.
The thesis represents a significant step towards enhancing the well-being of nursing students and ensuring the resilience of healthcare professionals in the face of unexpected challenges.
Beyond the integration into Moodle, some proposed future development ideas involve optimizing the material through
the addition of interactive features such as live forums and live-chat support. These enhancements should aim to create a mo
