End-of-Life (EOL) care needs and demands are significantly rising. Nursing students, who are the reserve skills for future nurses, are projected to be the main providers of future high quality EOL care. It is crucial to train nursing students for practice standards that provide end-of-life care as a component of their nursing learning experience. To improve their knowledge and abilities in providing EOL care and managing end-of-life patients, nursing students need the most educational training.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects of education as well as the teaching methods used on nursing students in providing end-of-life care. The aim was to facilitate in improving competence of nursing students that could help them providing end-of-life care.
The method used was a descriptive literature review, which was completed through database searches from PubMed and CINAHL. The initial search generated 397 articles, using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 299 articles were excluded and 13 articles were included. An Inductive content analysis was utilized in this research to develop a broad perspective of the subject.
Results showed that the effects of education on nursing students in providing end-of-life care are mainly in cognitive and socio-behavioral aspects. It was discovered that the main teaching methods used in end-of-life care education are commonly via simulation, classroom lectures, clinical practice and debriefing which are found to be effective.
