Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a serious, a disorder that affects millions of people. Non-pharmacological strategies and treatments include the use of motivational interviewing when talking to patients about their alcohol use, peer support or mutual help groups, and individualized therapy. Nurses are in a prime position to educate themselves and patients on evidence-based treatments for AUD and to help patients access those treatments.
The purpose of this study was to described the non-pharmacological methods used to treat alcohol use disorder. This study aimed to provide knowledge that could help nurses and students to improve their working methods of treatment for patients with alcohol use disorder.
A descriptive literature review was used in this study. The articles were obtained from reliable databases CINAHL and MEDLINE. Total of ten (10) articles including eight (8) quantitative and two (2) qualitative methods were reviewed. The articles included were published between 2013- 2023.This study were analyzed by utilizing inductive content analysis.
The results of the study showed the non-pharmacological treatments for alcohol use disorder. The treatments utilized were psychosocial treatments, psychoeducation and holistic intervention. In addition, the impotance of non-pharmacological treatment in nursing invaded the used of nursing care approach and nursing knowledge and attitudes.
This study will introduce the use on non-pharmacological methods of treatment in patients with alcohol use disorder. It will increase the knowledge of nurses and students, to broaden their awareness, and strengthen their existing clinical abilities. It allows them to give suitable and up-to-date non-pharmacological treatments that are safer, more effective, and less expensive than pharmaceutical approaches.
