Due to the lack of knowledge about dementia and home- based care for people living with dementia, this thesis focuses on educating family members on how to care for their relatives living with dementia. In Kenya the family members play a key role in taking care of those affected by dementia mostly the elderly. Majority of the population in Kenya have little knowledge to lack of it when it comes to dementia and often is associated with being crazy or mentally unstable.
The purpose of this thesis was to create a flyer providing information to Kenyan families with knowledge about dementia, to diminish stigma and equip them with necessary care giving skills and offer a comprehensive guide to foster a supportive home environment for people living with dementia, which entails simple communication skills, stressing on the importance of patience and empathy in managing their behavioural changes. Practical recommendations for adapting the home set up to enhance safety and familiarity are outlined, along with creating structured routines that contribute to a sense of security of individuals with dementia and their caregiver.
In utilizing information from existing literature and evidence-based guidelines, this thesis will equip family members with knowledge to manage the complexities of providing compassionate and effective care for individuals with dementia in a home setting. The product is relayed using flyers.
