The main purpose of this functional thesis was to make guiding material in form of a video to demystify the myths and misconceptions surrounding the use of contemporary family planning methods in Kenya with informal settlements of Nairobi as the target audience. The facts presented were based on existing literature concerning the myths and conceptions about the use of various modern family planning methods.
The objective of this thesis was to tackle the myths and misconceptions surrounding modern family planning and eventually encourage the uptake of modern family planning. The information search for resulted 116 records in total (CINAHL=33; PubMed= 83). Other sources which included websites, organizations and published reports led to 5 records bringing the number of results into a total of 121. After further screening, the thesis remained with a total of 22 articles. Some of the notable family planning myths are that they lead to promiscuity, are only for women, can lead to deformed babies and infertility.
The final product of the final thesis is an animated video which highlights the common myths and misconceptions about family planning in Kenya. The video also explains the truth debunking the myths and misconceptions. The video is available on YouTube, and is leveraged on the power of social media to reach out to the target audience in the informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya.
