Tiivistelmä
The primary goal of this bachelor’s thesis was to comprehensively compile and analyze crucial information concerning the procedures of piston overhaul in marine diesel engines. This included essential information about the disassembly, inspections, repairs, and reassembly of a piston.
The author also aimed the writing to provide maritime engineering students with a hands-on understanding of how inspections and checks done on the piston of a marine diesel engine can be successfully implemented. It was also the goal of this study to generate knowledge that would be beneficial to those who would be conducting similar engine maintenance tasks.
Furthermore, the author used relevant sources, for instance, marine engineering-related books and engine manuals, with the motive of finding out the answer to why it is significant to carry out piston overhauls on marine diesel engines. The author found that the main reason for the diesel engine piston overhaul is to assess wear and tear that may affect the engine performance.
Faulty pistons may hinder the engine’s efficiency. Thus, a conclusion was drawn that it is essential for onboard engineers to prioritize conducting planned maintenance of the pistons as recommended by the engine makers. Scheduled maintenance is done to avoid wear and tear that may lead to breakdowns and damage to the engine parts, particularly those associated with pistons. In addition, an initiative-taking approach can help improve engine performance and prevent costly repairs or downtime.
