Tiivistelmä
Remote work has stayed widely popular after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time the business landscape has changed and facing continuous adversities has become normal. This sets new demands to organizations where most of the people work in remote setting. Resilience can help to minimize the impact of uncertainties and focus on performance.
The objective of the study was to explain what factors enhance resilience in remote work. At first, organizational resilience frameworks and models were explained. These describe their in-terpretations of resilience, and some key resilience indicators. Then in the empirical part, three previous research on resilience and virtual work were explained. The resilience frameworks and models, and the findings of these three research on virtual work formed a synthesis, that con-ducted the results of this study.
The concepts of remote and virtual work in this study, were equally referred to explain working conditions where a lack of face-to face contact existed despite the working location. Resilience as a concept, was also referred as a capacity to bounce back from challenges or setbacks.
The study was conducted as a research literature review with qualitative method consisting of secondary data. The secondary research data was collected in January - February 2024. Due to lack of recent research that combined both virtual work and resilience, only three applicable studies were found. They were published between 2020 and 2023.
Results showed that in resilience frameworks, there was a common understanding on resilience factors and these findings were comparable to resilience factors in virtual work. Psychological safety, adaptability, commitment, and empowerment were needed in virtual teamwork and those strongly related to the general factors enhancing resilience. Study showed that resilience is adaptive, and it can be developed as a capability. Understanding past and present is crucial in preparing for future adversities. This can improve the capability of survival and increase the capacity for performing and thriving after setbacks. However, the building process is dynamic and influenced by varying external and internal factors. Processes, organizational culture, sense of community, team maturity and leadership influence resilience and the organization’s ability to renew itself.
Building resilience in remote context needs support and commitment from the organization. It is essential for organizations who want to be dynamic and successful in the new digital environment. The ability to adapt and thrive when facing continuous challenges in the new business landscape is a key capability that should be prioritized. The results are suitable for organizations with knowledge workers. They provide information for organizations, teams, and leaders to support the resilience development in remote work.
