This thesis examines the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural implications of eco-tourism in Sri Lanka's Southern Province. The region, observed for its outstanding biodiversity, provides an exceptional location for investigating the effects of eco-tourism, a major component of sustainable development projects that seek to combine economic growth with environmental preservation and community growth.
The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative surveys of 93 local individuals with qualitative interviews with three business owners and three international residents. This methodology offers a comprehensive evaluation of eco-tourism's various implications. The economic findings demonstrate that eco-tourism has a major impact on local employment creation and local economic development, nevertheless, it also raises difficulties regarding financial stability and equal benefit distribution. Environmentally, while eco-tourism promotes conservation efforts and develops ecological awareness, it additionally imposes pressures on local ecosystems, underlining the importance of effective management strategies. Eco-tourism encourages cultural transition and assists to conserve local traditions, but it also raises concerns about cultural commodification.
The conclusions imply that, while eco-tourism provides full-scale benefits to the Southern Province, demanding strategic planning is required to ensure that these benefits are sustainable and of a sufficient magnitude. Recommendations are provided for policymakers and stakeholders to improve the effective effects of eco-tourism while restricting its capabilities and limitations.
