The objective of the study was to develop a process for outsourcing the production of assembly parts. This outsourcing is of great importance as it is the first step on the case company road to industrialization and will also help in fulfilling the demand growth. It allows the case company to focus more on the research and development of new products and technologies by reducing the workload placed on the internal CNC parts production department.
To achieve this study objective, a design research approach was used, and it comprises of four stages. The first stage was the current state analysis to examine how the CNC parts outsourcing process was done and identify the strengths and weaknesses which will be beneficial for pinpointing what to improve. The next stage was the literature review where existing literature was studied in search of best practices that provide solutions to the identified weaknesses. The third stage was the initial proposal stage where the outcome was the co-created initial CNC parts outsourcing process together with other stakeholders. The fourth and last stage was the validation stage where the co-created CNC part outsourcing process was validated with relevant stakeholders.
The outcome of the validated stage was the CNC parts outsourcing process which can be used to carry out a successful parts outsourcing project in the case company. With the created outcome, the created parts outsourcing process can supplement other parts acquisition processes like in-house parts production process and procurement process to form a unified document which can be used as the case company sees fit.
