Ankle sprains can cause chronic ankle instability by impeding everyday tasks and competitive performance. Kinesio taping, developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase, helps patients with chronic ankle instability by supporting and calming soft tissues and enhancing dynamic postural control and lower limb stability.
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of kinesio taping on chronic ankle instability.
This bachelor’s thesis employed a modified approach to literature review, drawing upon databases such as PubMed, Science direct, Wiley library, and CINAHL. A total of seven articles were chosen including randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, controlled repeated measures studies, and cohort studies, all aligning with the specified inclusion criteria.
Results suggest that kinesio taping has promising effects on improving gait functions, joint range of motion, muscle function, and body balance. It may also help reduce the risk of ankle sprains during sudden movements. Kinesio taping can enhance the Body’s responds to sudden jumping motions, potentially reducing the risk of ankle sprain. With longer tape lengths, kinesio taping can enhance the body's sense of where the ankle is, which could be beneficial for those with chronic ankle instability and even those without it. Kinesio taping seems to be a useful addition to treating chronic ankle instability, providing support, stability, and possibly preventing future ankle problems.
The literature review examined seven studies that focused on the effects of kinesio tape on chronic ankle instability. The thesis suggests that kinesio taping could help manage pain, improve how well people can move, and enhance body awareness in those with chronic ankle instability.
