Tiivistelmä
The goal of this thesis was to study the perception of servant leadership on team motivation and project success.
The topic has been studied through theory in a literature review and empirically in semi-structured interviews. Four project management professionals were interviewed in four different case companies in Western Finland. The literature review provided the foundation for empirical research. The findings of the interviews were compared with those of the literature review, and conclusions and generalizations were made.
The findings in both the literature review and empirical research are similar. For example, servant leadership is perceived to have a positive effect on both project success and team motivation. A key theoretical contribution of the research shows that servant leadership in challenging and complex project situations may be too gentle a style. However, there is a need for further research to generalize this finding, because the sample size was small. It is recommended to conduct a survey on a larger sample in different companies, for example conducting a survey study.
From a practical perspective, characteristics of servant leaders in project management can motivate the team and increase possibility of success. Although in challenging project situations, where quick decisive actions are required, servant leadership can be perceived too gentle a style, indicating that combining different leadership styles could be more effective.
