Tiivistelmä
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental and intellectual disability caused by differences in the brain functioning. ASD affects children`s nervous system, their growth, and the pace of their development.
There is no standard treatment method for ASD, but several available therapeutics and intervention methods can help minimize the symptoms and maximize the skills and abilities of the ASD child. ASD among children in developing countries is prevalent but diagnosis and knowledge about this condition is inadequate. This thesis examined the current situation of perception, challenges, and interventions performed regarding the ASD among children with up to the age of seven in developing countries. The aim was to contribute to the advancement of knowledge of parents about the ASD in developing countries.
The study for this thesis was based on a literature review of qualitative research. For the data collection, two main electronic database sources namely ‘Scopus’ and Google Scholar’ were used for the systematic search of literature. For the analysis of the literatures, content analysis method was used.
The analyses of the results from literature reviews entails that there are a lot of challenges, lacking, misunderstandings, and strategic issues regarding the knowledge, care practices, service availability, and trainings and intervention programmes for ASD among children in developing countries. However, the knowledge of ASD is becoming accessible among the parents, caregivers, families, societies, and governments in the developing countries. The recent years have been seen as progressive years in terms of awareness, screening, and establishment of infrastructures for training and educational purposes in developing countries.
The results produced in this thesis could be helpful to better understand the ASD among children in developing countries, offer better care practices, and promote better intervention programmes in developing countries. It provides several recommendations that can help improve care practices, current knowledge and perceptions, policy development, and awareness and intervention programmes.
