Tiivistelmä
The thesis explores the global expansion of SMEs into new markets and the associated risks, including commercial, cross-cultural, country-specific, and currency risks. These risks are unique to each country. This research aims to investigate the U.S. as a target country and analyse these risks for Finnish companies entering the American market.
This thesis investigates the most suitable market entry mode for the commissioning company. It is a Finnish company with prior experience in expanding internationally into other European countries. Currently, the company is considering expansion into the U.S. market, specifically the East Coast. The primary objective is to develop a comprehensive entry plan tailored to the company’s needs and the chosen ways in which the company operates.
The research includes a theoretical framework that explores different market entry modes and provides a detailed analysis of each mode in order to determine which one is most suitable for the company. The theoretical framework serves as a foundation for defining practical recommendations and ensuring a successful entry.
The data was collected through qualitative research methods such as observation and interviews. The author has been employed by the commissioning company throughout the research and has carried out the observation. Interviews were held with individuals directly related to the industry in which the company operates, professionals who assist Finnish companies with internationalization, and experts providing legal advice and practical support.
The thesis offers a detailed description of the U.S. market from a business perspective, including an analysis of the political and legal environments, which directly impact the business landscape. The findings aim to equip the company with actionable insights and a strategic roadmap, enhancing its competitive advantage in the East Coast market.
