India's economy is among the fastest-growing globally, currently holding the 13th position in container throughput. Despite this, a significant portion of its container traffic is transshipped through international hubs such as Dubai, Singapore, and Colombo. This rerouting leads to substantial revenue losses for Indian ports, estimated between $400 to $600 million annually.
This study explores the possibility of transforming twelve main public ports in India into major transshipment hubs or regional transshipment centres, aiming to retain more revenue and reduce costs. Through a comprehensive literature review, key characteristics of an ideal transshipment hub were identified and ranked based on their importance in relevant studies.
