Tiivistelmä
The objective of this study was to build a storage system out of recycled server parts that could be used by students and teachers of Metropolia for running virtual machines and data storage purposes.
The device at the core of the thesis uses the Dell PowerEdge R730 server, with a Dell PowerVault MD1200 DAS disk enclosure connected to it. The device runs TrueNAS software, as this is the most suitable open source network attached storage device software option.
The outcome of this study is a network attached storage device built out of a recycled Dell server which is ready to store more than 20TB of data and has the ability to run virtual machines alongside storage operations.
The outcome of this thesis gives the university a device which can be used in a wide range of studies, serving as a valuable tool which can make the studying process easier by providing storage and providing a dedicated device for exploring software virtualization.
