Tiivistelmä
The goal of this thesis was to explore how manufacturing companies use the combination of project management guidelines and lean management, particularly production leveling, to optimize their production systems. Knowledge gained from this study is used to give recommendation to the case company, Oilon Oy, to consider in their production system.

A qualitative research method was performed using extensive literature review for the theoretical part. The empirical part was covered from the observation of the operations in the Oilon Oy Kokkola factory and semi-structured interviews of key personnels that had immense knowledge of the daily operations of the factory and company strategy. The study is a single case study inspired by the author’s interest in the topic and the company’s need for recommendations in their production systems. The literature review guided the interviews, and findings from the interviews were used to draw conclusions and give recommendations on the possible ways the company can utilize project management and production leveling in their production system.

From the literature review findings, we can deduce the fact that the challenges identified in the interviews could be addressed through project management guidelines, lean management tools, and production leveling. While this study was limited to a single case with a small sample size, further research with a larger sample is needed to better understand the bottlenecks, challenges, and the employee’s receptiveness to system changes.
