The main subject of this thesis is Seasonal workers in Lapland. This research was done in order to answer 2 research questions. What are the factors that contribute to the seasonal workers’ decision to extend their stay in Lapland? What is the role of seasonal workers that stayed in Lapland in the future of seasonal work?
The objectives of this research are to find and analyse the different retention factors that contribute the seasonal workers decision to extend their stay in Lapland. In addition the thesis will try to identify how the seasonal workers staying in Lapland longer will affect on the future of seasonal working.
The knowledge background is mostly based on place attachment theory. In addition there are chapters on factors like the Finnish working culture and cross culture management.
This thesis used qualitative research in the form of semi structured interviews. All the participants are seasonal workers that stayed in Rovaniemi for longer time than they planned.
The research was a success and as a result answered both research questions. All the participants showed some level of place attachment and connection to place attachment factors. All the seasonal workers that participated in this thesis stayed in Lapland and advanced in their career in the tourism sector. In addition, the research revealed a new factor that was not considered in the start.
