The objective of this thesis was to develop methods for identifying art styles, which can be used when creating art style identity for a game or a game studio. The relationship between various art styles and game genres was studied, the focus being on mobile game industry and furthermore strategy games. The main goal was to find a solution that could bring more variety to art styles in mobile games.
This thesis was made to give tools to professionals and novices of the game industry, by offering a unified language that narrows down the communication gap between artists and non-artists in the field of game design. With the help of a visualised formula, artists can reason their artistic choices more effortlessly, improve project pipelines, and reduce the time used on research work.
The thesis was written as a commissioned research project for Rovio, from the perspective of a producer in the game industry. The practical outcomes of game art production, and theoretical knowledge of different art styles, can support the development of a game artist. The findings can be especially useful to newcomers in the art and game industry.
