Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this literature review was to describe the challenges nurses face when performing triage in accident and emergency departments and strategies to manage those challenges. The aim was to provide new knowledge that could be utilized to enhance nurses’ competence in performing triage.

The method used was a descriptive literature review, which was conducted through searching the databases CINAHL, PubMed and Medline. A total of 16 studies were reviewed and analyzed using inductive content analysis.

The results indicated two main themes: challenges nurses faced when performing triage and strategies to overcome these challenges. The challenges related to triage fell into 12 generic categories. The most common challenge identified is triage process accuracy challenges with most sub-categories totaling 7. Subsequently, 9 generic categories were determined as strategies, wherein continuous training and education had the most sub-categories.

Our findings conclude the vital and indispensable role of a nurse against the many challenges that affect the triage process and their ability to deliver efficient and effective care. A spectrum of strategies has been identified, aimed at alleviating these challenges. Further research can be conducted to find more or better solutions for triage challenges without current strategies.
