The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses experience higher levels of occupational, physical, and psychological stress than nurses in other hospital departments. One of the main occupational health concerns for nurses is occupational stress, and it has been shown that high quality service delivery and outstanding performance at hospitals depend significantly on job satisfaction.
The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of occupational stress on job satisfaction among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. It aimed to describe the causes of occupational stress and its effect on job satisfaction among nurses working in the intensive care unit.
A qualitative study was utilized as the methodological approach and descriptive literature review as the method. The articles were obtained from reliable databases CINAHL and PUBMED. Total of eleven (11) articles including one (1) mixed, and ten (10) qualitative methods were reviewed. The articles included were published between 2013- 2023. This study was analyzed by utilizing inductive content analysis.
The results of the study showed that the causes of occupational stress among intensive care unit nurses were workload and staffing, and workplace stressors. And its effects were burn out and job dissatisfaction.
This study will introduce approaches for reducing occupational stress which can be applied individually for ICU nurses and organizational level. By taking part in stress management programs that include education and training on coping mechanisms from the hospital, nurses can obtain support in controlling occupational stress-related concerns.
