Logline:
When deeply religious lesbian youth worker Laura promises to an angsty queer teenager Anni to finally pursue love, Laura must confront her repressed religious trauma driving her toward a nihilistic void.
Synopsis:
After her mother’s death, Laura moves back to her childhood hometown and starts working at the local church. She meets Anni, a queer, angsty teen
struggling to come out to her conservative parents. Anni learns of Laura’s inexperience with women and makes her promise to pursue the café owner,
Anita, while Laura pledges to help Anni come out to her parents.
Laura and Anni grow closer as they try to figure out Anni’s parents’ views on homosexuality. Meanwhile, Laura, battling her internal demons, offers shelter to a homeless man she mistakes for Jesus. Encouraged by Anni, Laura and Anita go on a date, but after their first kiss, Laura briefly sees Anita as the devil and throws her violently off a bridge. Anita survives the fall but vows she and Laura will never be together.
Tormented by visions of the devil, Laura becomes increasingly paranoid. Anni becomes concerned and makes Laura promise to stop talking about the devil. Meanwhile, the Jesus guy, thinking Laura and Anni are in a relationship, tells Laura’s coworker about his suspicions, leading to Laura being fired and Anni’s parents discovering their daughter’s sexuality. Shocked and jobless Laura denies Anni’s pleas for help as Anni’s parents are taking her to a ‘healing prayer circle’. In her despair Laura turns to the Jesus guy only to learn he is not Jesus, shattering her faith. As she understands no God or anyone ever has loved her, her mental state deteriorates and she kills the Jesus guy.
Laura storms the church camp, where a group of conservative Christians, including Anni’s father, are preparing to perform conversion therapy on Anni. Wielding an axe, Laura kills several people before Anni stops her from killing her dad. Anni flees with Laura but alerts the police, who surround them on the bridge. Confronted by the meaninglessness of her life, Laura jumps to her death. After Laura’s funeral, Anni meets her girlfriend and, reflecting on Laura’s tragic end, realizes she must start focusing on the good in life.
