This thesis examines the contributions of Project Management Offices (PMOs) to organizational success while analyzing the key characteristics and focus areas of the existing literature.
The research utilized a combination of systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis to assess the evolution, trends, and thematic focus of PMO’s and organizational success literature from 2001 to 2024. The study systematically synthesizes findings related to PMO’s value delivery and best practices in areas of project and program management, people management, performance measurement and management, project portfolio management and positioning the PMO for success.
The bibliometric analysis reveals that the literature on PMOs and organizational success has seen steady growth and strong international collaboration but remains reliant on foundational studies, revealing a need for newer theoretical frameworks and contemporary research models. The focus of the literature has evolved from foundational discussions on PMO roles and structures to detailed exploration of performance, impact and their strategic value in organization. Findings also showed that PMOs theoretically contribute to the organizational success indicators used in this study.
This study is limited by its reliance on secondary data, focusing solely on published literature without empirical validation through primary data collection. Nonetheless, the findings offer practical implications for PMO or organizational leaders and stakeholders seeking to maximize their PMO potential and implement strategies grounded in proven outcomes rather than anecdotal evidence.
