The thesis titled Exploring Nursing Role in Medical Tourism: A Scoping Review. The purpose of this literature review was to find out what are the roles of nurses in medical tourism. The thesis started by explaining what medical tourism is and how they have been growing in recent years.
Theoretical frameworks described the difference between health tourism and medical tourism, the motivation for doing medical tourism, and examples of medical tourism. Theoretical frameworks also explained briefly what nursing roles in medical tourism are.
The research method used in the thesis was a scoping review and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist (PRISMA-SrC). The data was found from electronic databases which are CINAHL, Elsevier, MEDLINE, and PUBMED. There are a total of 11 articles being selected for analysis out of 112 articles. The articles were chosen based on keywords, inclusion, and exclusion criteria. PRISMA flow was used as tool to appraise the literature.
Based on the study, the result showed variety of nursing roles in medical tourism. The study showed that nurses need cultural competency in medical tourism, nurses also required to understand management and administration skill such as understanding ethic, regulations, and law between jurisdictions. Another role of nursing in medical tourism is an educator both for patients and for future nurses. Lastly, nursing has a role that act as facilitator between medical tourism stakeholders and tourism actors.
