Elderly immigrants face inevitable occurrences when moving to another country. For instance, language of the host country makes an impact in struggling to communicate and hesitant to inquire regarding health services. In host country, the integration of immigrants into health care system is a significant issue, particularly in those countries receiving voluminous number of immigrants for example in European countries.
The purpose of this study was to describe the challenges of caring for elderly immigrants in healthcare. This descriptive literature review aimed to produce new knowledge for healthcare providers to develop strategies in providing care for elderly immigrants.
Descriptive literature review was executed through database searches from CINAHL and Medline. Literature used in the review was searched from bibliographic databases CINAHL and Medline. Research methodologies utilized four qualitative studies, three exploratory studies, two cross-sectional studies, one observational study, and one grounded theory. Literatures used were published from 2014-2022.
JBI critical appraisal checklist and Julkaisufoorumi classification (JuFo) were used for methodological quality assessment. Inductive content analysis was conducted from the 11 selected studies from the database search. Therefore, categorized into four main categories, six generic categories, and 18 sub-categories.
The main results of the study showed the challenges of caring for elderly immigrants. The results revealed that the primary challenge of caring for elderly immigrants was individual challenge. This includes communication difficulty, personal barrier, and emotional problem.
The main challenges of caring for elderly immigrants were individual, cultural, social, and financial challenges. The most significant challenge, based on the results, was the individual challenge of elderly immigrants that includes communication difficulty, personal barrier, and emotional problem. Besides cultural difference and indifference, social impediments and financial difficulty were also figured. Result may aid to formulate effective solutions to the challenges of caring for elderly immigrants that can eventually lead to provide quality care and may result to positive healthcare outcomes and satisfaction for elderly immigrants.
