Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels caused by the body's inability to produce enough insulin or the body's inability to use the insulin it produces. Nurses play an important role in geriatric care and they face many challenges in taking care of geriatric patients with diabetes. The purpose of this bachelor´s thesis is to describe the challenges faced by nurses in taking care of geriatric patients with diabetes. This thesis aims to improve knowledge in taking care of geriatric patients with diabetes.
A descriptive literature review method has been applied in this thesis. Ten articles were obtained from CINAHL and PubMed, which are both reliable databases. In the selection of articles, Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and a prisma diagram was used to outline the selection of articles. Inductive content analysis method was used to analyse the results and answer the research questions.
The results of this thesis indicate that nurses face many challenges in taking care of geriatric patients with diabetes. It also indicates that there are possible solutions that can be applied to reduce or solve these challenges. Some of the challenges identified in the study included physical and psychological effects of aging, presence of underlying chronic conditions, cognitive decline, sensory impairments, depression and self-neglect among geriatric patients, lack of resources in care settings and shortage of stuff in care facilities. The study also identified solutions such as educating patients and their family members, psychological counselling services to patients, use of aiding materials such as hearing aids, training of nurses, improving resources in care facilities and better communication and collaboration within healthcare teams.
