The aim is to explore the potential of the Photovoice method in empowering elderly immigrants to share their experiences and perspectives. Gaps in social engagement and self-expression within this community are addressed through this exploration. By enabling the documentation and reflection of unique viewpoints, the suitability of the Photovoice approach for fostering community inclusion and contributing to social integration is evaluated.
A development-oriented approach was employed in the study, utilizing a series of workshops where participants were introduced to Photovoice. Training on photography techniques and group discussions were provided to encourage participants to connect and share insights about their experiences. The material generated through these sessions formed the core data, allowing for a deep, participatory exploration of participants' lives. The workshops revealed that a platform for expression was successfully provided by Photovoice, building both confidence and a sense of community among participants.
The photographs and narratives shared highlighted the challenges and resilience within the elderly immigrant community, offering valuable insights for stakeholders. Feedback was received, confirming the method's effectiveness in increasing participant engagement and connection.
Photovoice holds significant potential for empowering marginalized communities, fostering social inclusion, and engaging elderly immigrants in meaningful self-expression. While effectiveness was noted, careful planning and support are required to accommodate diverse abilities and needs.
