The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world, as interest in cheap clothing has not slowed down. The linear economic model currently used in the industry is polluting our planet as each phase is not mindful of the waste it produces in the future. To solve this problem, we would need to implement circular principles into the fashion industry to close the economical loop as well as minimize environmental damages. These principles are eliminating waste and pollution, looping materials, and resources, which would eventually rebuild nature and biodiversity. Each phase of the product lifecycle needs to be redesigned to fit with the principles of circularity. The phases include raw materials, production, consumption, reuse, and collection. Flaws can be recognized in each phase, but some improvements have already been introduced as the interest in second-hand fashion has been on the rise. Reusing and reselling culture has made its way into mainstream media, but giant fast fashion corporations are still making profit, which are the biggest pollutants in the industry. The sheer amount of clothing that already exists is causing big problems as well, as recyclability of these cheaper made garments is more difficult, and companies are producing more than is needed. This thesis delves into the environmental effects this industry has on our planet, as well as presenting some options for what could be done for the future to promote sustainable fashion for everyone.
