Mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities negatively affect people in a way that they cannot properly function that leads to suffering and increased risk of self-harm. It is important that we focus more on medication management challenges in mental health nursing to properly treat patients diagnose with mental illness.
The purpose of this scoping review was to explain the medication management challenges in mental health nursing faced by the patients diagnosed with mental illness. The aim is to produce new knowledge regarding the medication challenges in mental health nursing faced by patients diagnosed with mental illness.
Scientific sources including CINAHL and MEDLINE were used to collect data for this study on the challenges in medication management that mental health nurses have when caring for patients who have been diagnosed with mental illness. After the search was focused using pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles were chosen.
The challenges associated with treating a mental health patient should be identified to successfully treat the patients. Out of the articles we found that four major concepts in medication management challenges in mental health nursing faced by patients diagnosed with mental illness including polypharmacy, adverse effects, misuse and non-adherence.
We would like to point out that this study encompasses four challenge concepts including polypharmacy, adverse effects, misuse and non-adherence. This means that the various challenge concepts explored throughout this study represents an opening to further identify associated medications management challenges in mental health nursing faced by patients diagnosed with mental illness.
