Going through repetitive funerals in her troubled family, a 10-year old girl strives her goal to break the perceived curse haunting her family caused by a menacing sandwich cake.
Synopsis
At her uncle's wake, Hilda (10) learns about a curse hanging over her family: A sandwich cake, traditionally baked by the matriarch of the family, is rumoured to cause death one after another. After accidentally killing a hamster in a microwave with her new best friend Petra, Hilda confides in her pet rabbit. This leads Hilda's mother to seek help from a therapist she found through a discount coupon. However, the therapist is only concerned about her own problems, and Hilda is left to believe she might be a murderer, the root of the curse.
When Hilda’s second uncle dies, her grandmother makes her bake another sandwich cake. Hilda hides it, hoping to break the curse and save her father, Iivo. Stubborn and stuck in the family ways, Iivo eats the cake at his brother’s wake, ultimately leading Hilda’s mother to divorce him. Hilda is left in the middle of her broken family: her father focuses on building a strange art project out of old metal pipes, while her mother leaves in search of eternal happiness. Meanwhile, Petra, wanting to bring hope to their lives, creates a plan to renovate an abandoned house for them to live in. They try to buy the house, but inevitably fail.
Desperate of losing her father to the curse, Hilda turns back to the therapist, who now claims to be an exorcist. But when her father dies despite the exorcism, she decides to take one last fight against the curse, finding support from her emotionally unstable brother. Together they go on a quest against the family traditions, to honor their father’s last wish: to be buried in the mausoleum he built in the backyard. After losing everything in a self help-scam, Hilda’s mother returns home and sees the mistakes she made. Finally, at Hilda's father's wake, she comes face to face with the cursed sandwich cake and the family matriarch. Hilda bravely refuses to eat the cake, inspiring other relatives to join her as they stand united against the family curse.
