Tiivistelmä
ADHD is currently one of the most prominent disorders among children globally. Promoting collaboration between the concerned pediatric patients and their caretakers play an important role in any successful nursing care plan. The collaboration can only be achieved where mutual understanding and realistic expectations are set. Therefore, relevant patient education contributes directly to the outcomes of the treatment and nursing plan. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the approaches that registered nurses can employ to execute patient education for the caretakers of children aged 3-12 diagnosed with ADHD. The aim is to contribute to the body of ADHD pediatric nursing expertise in patient education and family-centered care.

CINAHL and PubMed databases and manual search were utilized for articles retrieval. The search was then narrowed down by using preset inclusion and exclusion criteria. After that, a collection of 8 final studies was analyzed by inductive content analysis to answer the two research questions stated in this literature review (1) approaches nurses can use to educate caretakers of children with ADHD, and (2) the effectiveness of the studied approaches.

Results from data synthesis demonstrated various approaches that can facilitate patient education for caretakers of children with ADHD, including via a specifically designed program, education, guidance, skill training, consultation, and implementation. The effectiveness of the approaches was proven by preferable outcomes in the following domains: externalizing symptoms, ADHD symptoms, life quality, parent-child relationship, ADHD literacy, functional impairment, emotional problems, and sleep problems.

This literature review was conducted as a bachelor’s degree thesis project at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki, revealed that the patient education with family-centered care perspectives for children with ADHD have been overlooked with very limited related works that could be found. Providing the outstanding percentage of minors and numbers of families who are affected by this life-long disorder all over the world, this thesis is calling for more attention and resources to be allocated to the mentioned phenomenon, serving the purpose of improving healthcare quality for society as one of the major nursing goals.

The origin of this thesis has been checked by Turnitin, resulting in a similarity percentage of 27%.
