Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores the impact of Duolingo, a widely used online language learning platform, on the preparation for the YKI (Yleinen Kielitutkinto) exam among individuals with a foreign background seeking Finnish citizenship. The YKI test is crucial for demonstrating proficiency in the Finnish language, often required for citizenship and other official purposes in Finland. Given the growing reliance on technology in language education, this study aimed to assess Duolingo's effectiveness as a supplementary tool in preparing for the YKI exam.
The study focuses on a group of six students from foreign backgrounds enrolled in an intensive 10-week Finnish language course designed to prepare them for the YKI exam. Using a qualitative approach, interviews were conducted to understand how these students incorporated Duolingo into their study routines and their perceived benefits from using the platform.
The findings indicate that Duolingo provides a flexible and interactive learning experience, allowing students to practice at their own pace and in their own time. Its gamification elements and adaptability contribute to its popularity, offering an engaging way to reinforce language skills. However, limitations were also identified, including potential gaps in depth and structure when compared to traditional classroom learning.
This study offers insights into the role of technology in language learning and provides recommendations for integrating Duolingo into YKI exam preparation. The results contribute to the ongoing conversation about the effectiveness of digital tools in language education and offer guidance for educators and learners seeking to improve YKI exam preparation strategies.
